"The Exorcist" director films a "real exorcism"

The 1973 horror classic "The Exorcist" was just a movie, but director William Friedkin told Variety that he recently got to film a real-life exorcism and made a documentary of it, "The Devil and Father Amorth." The documentary has screened at this year's Venice Film Festival, which runs August 30 to September 9.
Father Gabriele Amorth was an exorcist with the Vatican's Rome Diocese who invited Friedkin to be present and film him while conducting an actual expulsion of an alleged demon from a human victim. Friedkin wrote to Amorth while visiting Italy a year ago, and the priest responded with an offer to meet.
"I think I came along at a time when he wanted people to become aware of this work because he wanted the Vatican to train more exorcists. He believed that I had enough cachet to take his storythat I would be able to bring it to the public by way of a film," Friedkin said.
Friedkin was conducting exorcisms daily in the final months of his life before his death in September 2016, according to Friedkin. The priest took Friedkin to witness him conduct the ninth exorcism of an Italian woman who was receiving the rites once a month.
The scene was "terrifying," Friedkin told Variety, adding that he felt "a great deal of empathy with this woman's pain and suffering." He also consulted with neurologists, brain surgeons and psychiatrists, whom he said told him that they not only could not figure out what might be causing her symptoms, but that they "had never seen anything quite like these symptoms" in their years of practice
